Climbing Mt. Whitney
[Image]: 3D Image: Mount Whitney with labeled trails

At 14,496 feet elevation, Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. Not surprisingly, it is one of the most popular wilderness destinations in the country. There are several routes up Mt. Whitney, the most popular of which is the Mt. Whitney Trail. When it is free of snow, the Mt. Whitney Trail is suitable for less experienced hikers. In 2006, significant snowfields were present well into July and early October storms marked the end of clear trail conditions for the fall. --Inyo National Forest website
